The Day of Ashura: A Time for Forgiveness, Reflection, and Renewal

The Day of Ashura holds a special place in Islam as a time for seeking Allah’s forgiveness, increasing acts of worship, and renewing one’s commitment to faith. It is a day of immense spiritual reward, particularly through fasting. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“Fasting on the day of Ashura, I hope from Allah that it will expiate the sins of the previous year.”

Ashura is also significant because it commemorates the day Allah saved Prophet Musa (AS) and the Children of Israel from Pharaoh. In gratitude, Prophet Musa fasted on this day, and the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) encouraged Muslims to observe it as well.

To distinguish the Muslim observance from other traditions, the Prophet (PBUH) expressed his intention to fast the ninth day of Muharram alongside the tenth, saying:

“If I live to see the next year, I will surely fast on the ninth.”

For this reason, many Muslims observe both Tasu’a (the 9th of Muharram) and Ashura (the 10th of Muharram).

Beyond fasting, Ashura is a valuable opportunity for reflection, repentance, and devotion. It invites believers to purify their hearts, seek Allah’s mercy, and strengthen their commitment to righteous living. The blessings associated with this day benefit both the individual and the wider community.

Among the virtuous acts encouraged on Ashura are:

1. Fasting for those who are able.
2. Remembering Allah through dhikr.
3. Making sincere du’a and seeking forgiveness.
4. Reading, reciting, or listening to the Quran.
5. Performing acts of kindness and charity.
6. Strengthening family ties and showing generosity according to one’s means.

According to the North American
Moon hotline based on local moon-sighting criteria, Tasu’a and Ashura in 1448 AH correspond to Wednesday, 24 June 2026, and Thursday, 25 June 2026, respectively.
